愚民思想というのは根強く、「ほんと、日本人ってバカばっかりだよな」という具合に、愚民思想に賛同する人というのは結構存在する。愚民思想が根強い人気を持っているのは、「人間は自分が批判の対象になっているとは想像もしないものである」からだという。私がこの真理を実感したのは、綾小路きみまろのファンを分析するテレビ番組を見た時だ。

その番組では、「綾小路きみまろのファンは、毒舌ネタのことを他人事だと思っている」という驚くべき事実を告げていた。綾小路きみまろの毒舌ネタは、中高年の哀愁を笑い飛ばす自虐ネタであり、ファン（当然、中高年が多い）もまた、自分自身を笑い飛ばしているものだと私は思っていたのだが、実際はそうではなかった。客に毒舌ネタの感想を聞くと、多くのファンが「いるよね、こういう人（笑）」という反応を見せていた。ファンにとって、毒舌は自分自身に向けられたものではなく、あくまでも「自分以外のかわいそうな中高年」を綾小路きみまろと一緒にイジッている、という感覚だったのだ。

このような鈍感力は、ベストセラーになった『バカの壁』にも通じる。私はこの本を読んだ時、「はいはい、どうせバカで話が通じなくてすみませんね」と、養老センセイに腹を立てたものだったが（笑）、どうも世間の反応は違ったらしい。この本を読んだ人の多くは、「いるよね、こういう話の通じないバカ」と、溜飲を下げていたというのを知って、私はショックを受けた。
